Asus FX53VD 15.6″ FHD Review

Updated March, 2019

The last model of our best gaming laptops of 2019 list is the ASUS FX53VD. It falls into the sub-800 dollars price bracket and in our opinion is one of the top models you can get for this kind of money. There are numerous things about it that make it a great overall gaming machine which won’t slug at more demanding games. It is also great for productivity thanks to its good battery life.

The FX53VG By Asus packs some serious power with its four core intel core i7-7700HQ processor, 8GBs of high-performance RAM, and an Nvidia geforce GTX 1050 graphics card. To supplement that you have a bright and vibrant Full HD 15 inch screen which can be a bit too reflective at times but is perfect for darker conditions. The laptop is a bit on the bulky side but at least the space inside has been used good and there is a stronger battery to make it last longer.

Now, let’s dive into the things that make this such an appealing product for most people that have a little more money to spend on their gaming setup.

Features That Make It Stand Out

Right off the bat, this laptop impresses us with one thing – the high-end specs on the inside. Everything from the processor to the storage type and the graphics card is top-shelf and this is what you should expect when paying 800 dollars for a laptop.

It also comes with Windows 10 Home Edition (64-bit) pre-installed which is a nice touch.

Product Rating: (4.5/5)

game being played on a laptop

  • Very fast CPU
  • Good amounts of RAM and Graphics processing power
  • Screen is bright and sharp
  • Has a backlit keyboard
  • Can handle almost all modern games at high settings
  • Very fast SSD storage

The CPU

The processor here is the best possible laptop processor yo ucan get from the 7th gen intel core CPU line. It is the quad core i7-7700HQ and runs normally at 2.8GHz. It can be overclocked to almost 4GHz which is insane for a laptop processor. There is a bit of thermal throttling happening when pushed to its limits but that is expected.

The fans can’t really keep up with all the heat coming out of the components when you are doing CPU-intense tasks and are a little noisier than we’d like.

RAM Memory

We can’t fault the RAM memory here. It is the industry standard of 8GBs DDR4 RAM running at 2144MHz which is okay but not perfect. Still, it is weird that laptops half the price of this one such as this Dell Inspiron have the same or even better RAM memory.

Something that Dell laptop doesn’t have, though, is a dedicated graphics card, which this ASUS has covered more than well enough. Let’s check it out.

GPU

Inside you will find an Nvidia geforce GTX 1050. It is a normal 1050 but with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM it still does a pretty decent job for most games today. If that isn’t enough video memory for you, you can get a higher GTX version such as a 1060 or even a 1080 inside a gaming laptop but those usually get the price well beyond a thousand dollars.

Storage

This laptop comes with a respectable amount of storage – 256GB. It has a Samsung SSD inside which is realyl fast both in terms of reading and writing speeds.

Display

The display is the typical 15.6 inch one you see in most gaming laptops in this price bracket. It is a Full HD one (1920×1080) but has a Gloss finish to it which is great for indoors gaming as it increases the sharpness and details but is really bad for any place that is brightly lit, as light will just reflect off your screen.

It still is a very bright display on its own with an average contrast but as we said, where it excels is the dark room. It has a thick bezel around it but we will talk about that in a moment.

Dimensions & Build Quality

In terms of dimensions this laptop isn’t particularly thin nor lightweight so carrying it around won’t feel very nice. It also doesn’t have a good feeling to it, as the materials have this sort-of old-styled plastic feeling to them.

The bezels of the screen also show the age of the laptop and take away a bit from the user experience.

The keyboard is nice to the touch and is responsive enough for most gaming needs. It has a backlit which is something we expect for this price.

Ports

In terms of ports there are plenty here. There are 3 USB A ports (usb 3.0) and one USB C. On top of that you get Ethernet connection, HDMI, and a 3.5mm jack for both headphones and mic in lines. This level of ports is great and kind of rare these days, making this Asus a true workstation apart from being a great gaming machine.

Asus FX53VD 15.6 FHD Gaming Laptop

If you are looking for a laptop but aren’t on a strict or low budget then the Asus FX53VD is definitely something you should consider. It packs a lot of processing power, has enough RAM and a good video card that can run modern games at high FPS and above-normal settings. The screen is nice and bright and will provide excellent gaming detail, although it is glossy and can be a bit too reflective at moments.
